What is enlightenment?

A student once asked his teacher, "Master, what is enlightenment?"
The master replied, "When hungry, eat. When tired, sleep."

This Zen story says that one should be present in whatever he is doing.

It says 'When hungry, eat'. Though it looks simple and any body would say this is what we do. We never do one thing at a time, our mind always keeps on moving from one thought to other. We are never totally present in any thing.

Hence, it says meditation means or enlightenment means being totally present in what ever we do.

Hungryness and satisfaction can't live simoltaneously. Same analogy applied on sleepiness & wants of sleep. Thing and want of thing can't go parallel - we call it "aakulta".

Enlightenment....an interesting term....what is enlightenment...is it the state of knowing the world or is it the state of knowing worldly facts???? For me it is the state of knowing oneself for 100%....Most of people would say they know themselves completely and there is no second thought they would give to this point....but then if that were the case, then one wouldn't be surprised at times by own behavior and say "How did I do it?? Didi I act like that? I should not have acted like this or that!!!!"

Very rightly said, Mayank. I would like to quote Osho here.

He says, "Enlightenment is the reward for watching yourself in action".
